Not worth drive from DC area especially now that 7S / HV and LM are in the mix. They added some good glade skiing as well that is the best of the 3 mountains unless there is a lot of natural snow (then Whitetail is). It has multiple lifts you can access, some good steaps on their head walls, and some nice blues. On a Sat or Sun we normally drive right past liberty and head to RT to be there at 8 am (from Montgomery County).

Liberty does have easier bump runs (less steap) so some of their bump runs are good for learning how to ski them. If you do ski on the weekend, be there at 8 am, ski to 11:30, then break for 90 minutes before heading back out to the back. My best days at Liberty have been after half days of school, etc. Great on a weekday, especially since it's the closest. But, Friday nights are a great time to ski there as you can really turn laps on the back quad or the high speed quad. As mentioned, it faces south and the snow can really soften, then when it freezes, it gets icy and crusty quickly. A couple of other thoughts.ĭon't ski Whitetail at night after a warmer sunny day. I believe they do have hotel on site, but you can also stay in nearby Somerset for considerably less and it's not a far drive from there. SEVEN SPRINGSĭefinitely the most terrain of any of the other Epic Mountains in PA, this is probably the best choice in terms of quality skiing. Terrain is pretty decent, but from what I've heard, also gets pretty crowded on weekends since moving to Epic pass. An "upside down" resort, JF is a bit unique in that the parking and lodge are at the top of the mountain. Prior to the Vail purchase, BB had been primary set up to attracted those who want park features, whereas JF was more for traditional downhill skiing (but that may have changed now?). JACK FROST / BIG BOULDERĪ pair of older resorts in the Poconos, I've only skied at Jack Frost. They seem to the be the most open to parking lot "tailgating" the past few years, which is a great option if you want to bring your own food and not deal with the crowds and prices of the lodge. For intermediate+ skiers, I find the terrain a bit more varied and interesting than Liberty as well. Older than both Liberty & Whitetail, it's also not very big, but it's position further north tends to draw less crowds than either Lib or WT.

The ski terrain at WT also faces south, which, in my experience, can lead to some weird conditions when it's sunny. Greater vertical than Liberty, and more lift options (and faster lifts) from the base of the mountain, but it can get a bit crazy near the base as pretty much every trail funnels down to it. Their beginners area and instructors are pretty decent for folks learning to ski. If you're renting equipment, DEFINITELY get there early on weekends as I've seen that line get ridiculously long. As another commenter mentioned, that single quad lift on the "frontside" can get very crowded as a choke point on busy days. If you're at least an intermediate skier that can do blues, it's not too bad to do laps on the "backside" of the mountain, where there are 2 quad lifts and even when crowded the lines move pretty well most of the time.but it can get boring the same handful of runs all day long. Possibly the smallest resort on this list(?), it and Whitetail both tend to get pretty crowed on weekends as they're the closest to the DC region. I apologize for not being to review the food that much, as I generally pack lunches or try to do things on the cheap as much as possible in that regard: LIBERTY I think only Liberty and Seven Springs have hotel accommodations on site, but not sure because I generally only do day trips to these places. I grew up near Liberty and have skied there for over 30 years, and have also visited quite a few others (have not been to Laurel or HV).
